Joel Goldstrand, a member of the Minnesota Golf Hall of Fame and noted designer of Minnesota and Upper Midwest golf courses, died Nov. 13. He was 83. Goldstrand grew up in Worthington, Minn., and played golf and basketball at Worthington High School. He played on two NCAA championship golf teams at the University of Houston and spent eight years on the PGA Tour, with a 12th-place finish in the 1970 U.S. Open at Hazeltine National in Chaska and an appearance in the 1971 Masters Tournament. He was the head professional at Minneapolis Golf Club for 16 years and became a full-time course designer in 1989.
